Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Sphynx from the Book of Shadows Vol. II

Layla A.
When Urban Decay released the Book of Shadows II, this was the brightest and only pink color out of the sixteen. Originally, I thought I would use it all the time. But, I just don't reach for it. It is an awesome eyeshadow, but it doesn't really excite me and feels rather mundane, comparatively speaking. I have a lot of pinks that stand out more and if I'm being honest, Sphynx just doesn't cut it- it blends in even though it stands out.

COLOR

Sphynx is a light, warm based pink and is definitely in the pastel family. It does look like a great spring color, but it offers nothing different special and looks like every other pink out there. It does have some very, very subtle rainbow sparkles and glitter, but they rarely show up when blended or even patted on.

FORMULA

Sphynx is soft and has good staying power, but it is not as pigmented as the others. Better than a lot on the market, but not up to the Urban Decay standard. It does blend well and look good on my brown eyes, but the formula is a little more powdery than normal. I don't really know what happened with this eyeshadow, and it is nowhere near a 'train wreck' status, but it is definitely off. When you get a brush, it does pick up color unlike MAC's Parfait Amour, but it is just not as bright next to other colors and gets lost in the mix.

FUNCTIONALITY

If you love baby pinks, this may be a color to consider. It is simply not up to my crazy pigmentation standards, but for ladies that like more subtle makeup, this could be really good. I do not see this being used in the summer, and it definitely is not a fall or winter color, so I only see it being useful at spring.

PACKAGING/PRICE

Urban Decay does not currently sell Sphynx as it was limited edition in the Book of Shadows II, but if you are looking for a below average barely visible pink, you can still find the Book of Shadows II on eBay and other various makeup websites, though you will probably pay a lot more than the original $48 for it, making it really not worth it.

FINAL OPINIONS

It definitely stands out as the brightest color in the Book of Shadows II, but in my vanity, it is a nothing. Besides the rainbow glitter there is nothing unique about it. I recommend it only if you already have your heart set on it, but do not run out and buy this palette just to have this color- it is not worth it in my book.
