Urban Legend and Green M & Ms: Chocolate Aphrodisiac

M & Ms Sex Sells

Pam Gaulin
Mars Snackfood recently came out with an all-green 14 ounce bag of milk chocolate M & Ms. There is much speculation online about the real meaning of the green-only M & M bag. Is it for the environment? Did they run out of red and pink? Is it to promote organ donation? For the true meaning behind the all-green bag of milk chocolate M & Ms, read on. The Green One's are an aphrodisiac, silly!

The Real Meaning: Aphrodisiac Milk Chocolate

According to the bag of all Green M & Ms, green is the "New Color of Love." This is Mars' nice way of saying that we know the urban legends behind the green M & Ms now we are going to market that urban legend right back to you. They know we think that this the aphrodisiac color.

What is the Urban Legend?

When I was in junior high all the boys would try to give the girls green M & Ms because everyone knew that these would put you "in the mood." This seems quite silly, and quite ridiculous when you think about the fact that most junior high kids back then thought holding hands was a big deal.

Still, it was an urban legend that I remembered when I saw the bag of all green milk chocolate M & Ms in the local drugstore. I laughed and bought a bag of this milk chocolate aphrodisiac.

If you don't think that Mars picked up on this urban legend and is trying to market it back to the generation that remembers this, consider the following packaging details.

The Proof is in the Words

The sexy, female green milk chocolate M & M takes up most of the bag. There is a little quote that reads, "Sweetie...it's all true." What's all true? That green M & Ms are "the new color of love"? Or that yes, these green M & Ms will put her in the mood. Is the Mars company confirming the urban legend that these are an aphrodisiac?

Granted, any chocolate will put women in a good mood, so they may have something there.

On the reverse side of the bag there is more of an explanation put forth by Ms. Green M & M that supports this theory.

"What is it about the green ones?" It reads.

The answer continues, "Honey, let's talk! People are always asking me about their ...ummm...special powers. Are they for real? There's only one way to find out!"

I am not making this up. This is the sexy and provocative message printed directly on the bag of All-Green M & Ms. Should this chocolate candy come with a PG-13 rating?

Mars did go so far as to put a playful "Mportant Notice" that appears like a warning label on this milk chocolate aphrodisiac.

"Consumption of The Green One may result in elevated Romance Levels. If you experience this effect, contact your Significant Other immediately. No official agency has verified these statements.....but what do they know about romance anyway?"

What more proof do you need that Mars is marketing the urban legend that green M & Ms make women horny?

Wild Internet Theories

On a whim I decided to research the Green milk chocolate M & Ms online to see if anyone else caught onto this sexy marketing technique. What I found instead were some pretty funny and wild theories.

Some people think that the green milk chocolate M & M bags are to help increase living donor and donation awareness. (http://www.transplantbuddies.org) Wrong organs, guys.

Note: Organ donation is good idea. I have an organ donor sticker on my driver's license. I just thought the theory was funny.

On Yahoo! Answers, people showed a lot of confusion, and actually seemed a bit miffed that green was getting all the attention.

Some people chimed in that this green coated chocolate was for for St. Patrick's Day. Sorry. Go fish.

Another person thought it was in support of going green. Nice try, but, no.

Yet another person actually suggested that the chocolate giant Mars "ran out of red." I hope she was joking.

Congratulations to the two people who got the milk chocolate aphrodisiac marketing angle correct:

"People clam (sic) the green ones are Aphrodite's. I think it is cute," one woman said.

"I think it comes from the rumor that the green ones make you well point blank horny.
I use to hear that in school all the time," the other correct woman wrote.

Other people admitted to "only eating the green ones." Hmmm, makes you wonder.
