Urbanears Headphones Review

Headphones as a Fashion Statement?

J G Hodnette
For a while now headphones have been dominated by the earbud variety. Everyone enjoys their small, portable iPod style headphones as they are going around town, but what they don't realize is the sound quality that they are sacrificing. Urbanears try to remedy this problem with their stylish large headphones. So what are the pros and cons of buying these headphones?

The Idea

One of the new ideas from Sweden is the seamless combination of fashion and function. Apple has already had their eye on this concept with their sleek iPod designs, but only recently have companies been developing customized headphones that you can wear to match your clothes. Choose your colors: blue, green, pink, white, etc. Your headphones become an accessory. For the company, the idea is that people will purchase numerous colors so that they can complement different clothes--it's what has made the fashion industry able to make money off of the same shirt in thirteen different colors as well.

Besides basic colors, Urbanears has also signed some deals with popular companies so that you can have Spiderman, Hello Kitty, Starwars, and Fame headphones as well. With so many headphones to choose from, it has really become a product where almost anyone can find something they like.

Styles

With its launch, Urbanears will have three different kinds of headphones. The first, called The Plattan, are the large retro looking headphones that are popular as fashion accessories right now. They include a special feature that lets your friends plug into your headphones with theirs so you can easily share music. The second are called The Tanto. These headphones are in an 80s style reminiscent of walkmans. Their sounds is good and just like the Plattan they come in a variety of colors. Finally for those who aren't ready to invest in bulky headphones there are the small and compact earbud style headphones also in a variety of colors. This modern headphone is called the Medis They have a unique design that anchors them into your ears you can dance around to your heart's content without worrying about your headphones slipping out.

Quality

Reviewers have been disappointed overall by the audio quality of Urbanears. Because of their focus on fashion, the actual audio of the product is average instead of amazing as you might expect. If that's not a problem for you then go ahead and enjoy them. For The Plattan, there have also been issues with comfort. Reviewers give the headphones a 3/5.
