Urbanization in Poor Countries
Poor countries are experiencing rapid growth in population due to technology and programs related to health. In the early nineteen hundreds the modern world began to export both science and food to needy parts of the world. In addition disease fighting methods such as vaccines and using antibiotics helped lower the death rate. The use of insecticides has helped control diseases such as malaria. All of these methods of help have lowered the death rate and subsequently raised the population. Cities have experienced growth due to this population growth and in addition there has been tremendous growth from the great number of jobs in the cities. (Macionis 2006)
Two times before the world went through big growths in its cities. The first growth was with the establishment of the first cities in the world. The second major growth was due to industrialization. The third period of growth happening now is due to both the general population increase and to the migration of people to cities in search of a better life style. This is putting a major strain on infrastructures and some cities are incapable of keeping up with the population. (Macionis 2006) According to Molly Sheehan the United Nations has predicted that sometime in 2008 half the world's population will be living in cities. (Sheehan M. 2007)
