U.S. Army Base Shooting: Fort Hood, TX - November 5, 2009

12 Killed, 31 Wounded

At 1:30 pm CST, Major Malik Nadal Hassan, 39 or 40, entered the Readiness Compound and opened fired on his fellow soldiers getting ready to deploy to Iraq. At least, one of those killed was a civilian police officer under contract with the U.S. Defense Dept., according to CNN.

There were 3 suspects total. Major Hassan was killed when taken into custody. 2 other suspects have been apprehended. The suspect used two handguns in the shootings. The other suspects have believed to enter the theatre where fellow soldiers were preparing for their graduation ceremonies upon returning from deployment.

Fort Hood is the largest U.S. Army base in the world. Adjacent to Kileen, TX and about 60 miles northeast of Austin, this sprawling complex is home to about 50,000 Army officers and enlisted personnel. Ft. Hood is also home to the Army's 1st Calvary Division.

Obama says shootings " a horrific outburst of violence" Express deep sympathy and support to families of injured and fallen soldiers.

Fort Hood is home to nine schools, 7 elementary and 2 middle schools who have been on lock down since shootings occurred. Exterior schools have all been released.

If you have a family member at Fort Hood, you are being urged to use text messaging as means of communication and leave all telephone lines open for emergency personnel.

Also, if you live in the Kileen area, the Red Cross has urged anyone can to donate blood as they are in shortage. Please call 1-888-776-9226. Contact www.redcross.org. to see if family members are okay.

Update @ 6:19 pm EST: Major Hassan named as a M.D. who works in the mental health profession and has also worked at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, DC.

Update @ 10:03 pm EST: Major Hassan not killed as first reported. Survived shooting and expected to make a full recovery. Hassan is in custody.
