US Army Third Infantry Heading to Iraq Sooner Than Expected

Famous Division Heading to Iraq as Part of Troop Surge

The U.S. House of Representatives has already voted its disapproval of President Bush's plan to send additional forces to Iraq, but the so-called "troop surge" continues. The Defense Department announced on February 16 that the 3rd Infantry Division will be sent to Iraq in March 2007, three months sooner than its previously announced deployment date of June 2007. The 3rd Infanty division is comprised of approximately 1,000 Soldiers. According to the Army, soldiers and families were notified of this change prior to the official announcement.

The accelerated deployment schedule undoubtedly impacts the families of those involved. The Army says it "continues to be completely supportive of Army families touched by the war's needs." Army officials praised the "steadfast and unrelenting support" of Army families. The strain on families, however, is clear. This is, in fact, the third Iraq deployment for the 3rd Infantry Division.

Retired Army Colonel David Hunt, speaking of service member families in general, told FOX News back in January that multiple deployments were sapping the energy of the armed forces. "The soldiers are tired," he said. "The families are going nuts. [This surge] is not the solution."

Previous generations, of course, dealt with extended deployments as well and much higher casualties. Nevertheless, in those wars, the Army could resort to a draft. Today, it relies on an all-volunteer force.

In an official statement, the Defense Department said: "U.S. troop levels in Iraq continue to be conditions-based, and are determined upon the recommendations of military commanders in Iraq and in consultation with the Iraqi government."

Opponents of the Iraq war continue to attack the President for his sending additional troops. Don Fowler, co-chair of the Democratic National Committee Veterans and Military Families Council, said in response to Bush's troop surge plans: "His plan to escalate the war in Iraq not only represents more of the same failed Iraq policies, it places tremendous additional burdens on our brave men and women and their families who have already sacrificed too much for the President's mistakes."

The 3rd Infantry Division is one of the more famous US Army divisions. Nicknamed the "Rock of the Marne" for its heroism in the First World War, the division has continued to distinguish itself since. The division fought in Europe during WWII and remained in Europe to help protect NATO allies during the Cold War. The division also fought in the Korean War. One brigade fought in Iraq during Operation Desert Storm and Marne division units deployed to Bosnia and Kosovo to restore security there.
