Many scientists believe that global warming is due in large part to the recent significant increase in the level of greenhouse gases in the earth's atmosphere. U.S. Energy Savings Corp. customers who enroll with the fixed price natural gas program, in addition to receiving peace of mind from volatile energy supply prices, can now mitigate the negative environmental impacts of their energy consumption.
"The average natural gas consuming American household is responsible for approximately 5 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually just from natural gas use for home heating. Now, our customers can do something to offset those emissions," said Brennan Mulcahy, CEO of U.S. Energy Savings Corp.
Participating customers can choose to offset 20% to 100% of their natural gas consumption through GEOgas. As part of this program, U.S. Energy Savings Corp. invests in initiatives that promote CO2 reductions such as industrial emission reduction programs, methane capture and use, and soil carbon removal.
In addition to being a first in the Illinois market, the product has another Chicago tie -- some of the offsets will be traded through the Chicago Climate Exchange; North America's only legally binding rules-based greenhouse gas emissions trading system.
"GEO is a simple, convenient program designed to help us, as energy consumers, reduce the size of our carbon footprints," Mulcahy said. "A customer who chooses 100% participation would effectively offset approximately 5 tons of greenhouse gas emissions. If nine of that customer's neighbors did the same, the offset would be more than 50 tons of carbon dioxide annually."
