The biggest upset involved women's fourth seed Jelena Jankovic, who got pushed to three sets in the first two rounds. Yesterday, Jankovic finally broke against Kaia Kanepi, 6-2, 7-6. After reaching the Open final in 2008, Jankovic hasn't gotten past the first week since then.
However, the rest of the US Open tennis 2010 schedule had the major seeds get decisive wins. Yet the most impressive performance came from 14'th seed Maria Sharapova, against hyped underdog Beatrice Capra. Countless comparisons were made between the 371'st ranked Capra and Melanie Odin - but Odin did not fall 6-0, 6-0 to Sharapova in round 3 last year.
Now that Sharapova has gotten through an American upstart this time, she is on to the round of 16. However, she next faces Caroline Wozniacki, who still hasn't broken a sweat in her US Open matches. Still, she actually lost a game against Yung-Jan Chan, before winning 6-1, 6-0.
On the men's side of 2010 US Open tennis, Roger Federer stayed perfect with another straight set win, while Novac Djokovic breezed through James Blake in straights. Djokovic's previous matches contained five set tests and fights in the grandstand, but nothing overshadowed him this time.
Robin Soderling also cruised to the fourth round, while Mardy Fish survived a five set match against Arnaud Clement. Fish remains one of the two top 20 American males left in the tournament, with John Isner trying to match him today.
Today's US Open action will mark the official halfway point of the schedule. In it, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray help complete the third round for the men, while the women's fourth round gets under way with Venus Williams, Kim Clijsters and Samantha Stosur.
After today, the quarterfinal round will begin to take shape for the women, while the men will be all set for the fourth round starting tomorrow. Except for Jankovic, yesterday's US Open tennis 2010 top seeds sent another message to the rest of the remaining field.
