US Open Tennis 2010 Starts to Form Super Showdowns

Robert Dougherty
US Open tennis 2010 is getting closer to the end. Thus far, the US Open tennis 2010 schedule is largely devoid of upsets, making the US Open tennis results pretty conventional. However, this has only fueled expectations for the final days, since all of the big names are still out there. As such, they are bound to face each other in giant championship showdowns, assuming they hold on a while longer. The first battles between major stars are starting to form, beginning yesterday and carrying into today.

On the women's bracket, two showdowns between top 10 players took place yesterday. Kim Clijsters continued her title defense against Samantha Stosur, while Venus Williams faced Francesca Schiavone. The two had been barely tested thus far, but if they got through the quarterfinals, they would get to face each other next.

As such, the US Open tennis 2010 schedule is the second straight to have a Clijsters-Williams semifinal. Of course, this time Clijsters is facing Venus, who is out to handle herself better than Serena did at this stage last year.

Clijsters made it to the semis with a difficult win, as she held off Stosur 6-4, 5-7, 6-3. For the first time in the US Open tennis 2010 tournament, Clijsters was pushed to the limit, but a series of breaks in the third set finished Stosur off. Williams had it a little easier against Schiavone, but held on with a 7-6, 6-4 victory.

While Clijsters and Williams prepare to face off, the second women's semifinal match will be set today. Caroline Wozniacki now enters the crucial stage in her quest for a first Grand Slam title, taking on Dominika Cibulkova. A win would put Wozniacki against Vera Zvonareva or Kaia Kanepi.

The US Open tennis 2010 schedule also looks conventional and star-studded for the men. Their fourth round ended yesterday with Rafael Nadal winning another straight set match, and with Sam Querrey becoming the last U.S. man to get knocked out. Fernando Verdasco and Mikhail Youzhny did better in advancing, with Verdasco rallying from two sets down against fellow Spaniard David Ferrer.

Today, the US Open tennis 2010 men's quarterfinals begin with a big showdown, as Roger Federer takes on Robin Soderling in another Grand Slam quarter. Soderling beat Federer in the French Open round of 8, ending Federer's record run of Grand Slam semifinals. Now Federer looks to reach a major semifinal for the first time since then.

Federer's bracket appears to be the most difficult, as he may face Novac Djokovic if he wins, while Nadal has a bracket cleared of any other superstars. Hopes are rising that the US Open tennis 2010 results could form the first Nadal-Federer Grand Slam final of the year -- yet Soderling could ruin all that today.
