President Obama dismisses Carter's racism argument

President Barack Obama has dismissed claims that the hostile rhetoric surrounding the health care reform debate is founded in racism. President Obama insists that the hostility is derived from what the public believes to be the role of government in the health care issue. The claim that the dialogue concerning health care has become exceedingly antagonistic was brought to the nation's attention by former President Jimmy Carter. Carter stated that he believed that the source of anger in the debate is rooted in racism.

Obama's new missile defense plan

President Barack Obama's decision to scrap the Bush administration's missile shield plans in Eastern Europe proved to be pleasant news for Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. Putin considers President Obama's move to be "right and brave". President Obama has a new missile defense plan, which he hopes would further isolate Iran without putting the United States at odds with Russia. Additionally, the new plan is intended to offer Israel and other Arab states protection from Iran.

Influential political writer Irving Kristol died Friday

Political writer Irving Kristol died of lung cancer Friday at the age of 89. Kristol is thought of as playing an important role in the "reshaping of the American climate of opinion".

First lady encourages support of Pres. Obama's health care overhaul plan

First lady Michelle Obama took the stage today at the White House to deliver a 23 minute speech on health care reform. In her speech, Mrs. Obama took the time to bring her audience's attention to the struggle of American families unable to obtain health care because of its high cost and ability to remove coverage from individuals who are gravely ill. Mrs. Obama encouraged women to support President Barack Obama's proposed reform which could protect health care coverage for the seriously ill and make coverage affordable to all Americans. Michelle Obama was quick to encourage support of health care reform, but stopped short of taking a policy making stance.

Congressional report says climate bill cost will be 'moderate'

A report released by Congress suggests that the proposed climate bill will not be so detrimental to America's finances. The bill, which is meant to reduce greenhouse gases, would only be "comparatively modest" when measured against the growth of the American economy is likely to experience over the next four decades. The bill was passed by the House this summer.
