Obama to give health care speech before Congress Sept. 9

Wednesday, September 9, President Barack Obama is expected to give a speech, which will respond to critics of his health care reform plan. In the address, the President is expected to explain his proposed plan in greater detail. A largely Republican opposition to the health care reform plan has caused public support for the plan to dwindle.

Pfizer fined $2.38 billion for rule violations

Major drug maker, Pfizer faces an enormous $2.38 billion fine as punishment for illegal promotion of their drugs. The company directed various luxury incentives toward doctors. Allegedly, Pfizer offered doctors free massage, resort and golf offers, which violates federal drug regulations. For the next five years, Pfizer will remain under the watchful eye of the Health and Human Service Department.

Poll finds dwindling support for Congress

A recent Pew Research Center poll reported that only 37 percent of Americans view its Congress favorably. In April, 50 percent of Americans felt positively about Congress. Democrats are in the danger zone as only 45 percent of voters intend to vote for a Democrat in the 2010 midterm elections.

Homeland Security Secretary warns Americans to prepare for more swine flu infections

Recent reports show that this coming fall flu season could be deadly as swine flu infections are expected to rise. Janet Napolitano, Homeland Security Secretary is recommending that Americans prepare themselves. Washing hands and coughing into shirt sleeves rather than hands are simple ways to protect oneself against possible infection. Thus far, the U.S. has suffered 550 swine flu related deaths and could suffer up to 90,000.

Will Justice Stevens be retiring soon?

Suspicions that Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens may retire next year are fueled by the fact that the Justice has hired fewer law clerks. Hiring fewer clerks is a tell tale sign that a retirement is coming because former Justice Souter hired fewer law clerks prior to his retirement from the Court. Justice Stevens is 89 years old and has been a member of the Supreme Court for over 33 years.

Belgian man arrested and charged with violating Iran arms embargo

The United States has accused Jacques Monsieur, a Belgian citizen of violating the Iran arms embargo. He was arrested in New York on Aug. 28 and charged with conspiracy to buy fighter jet parts with an Iranian by the name of Dara Fotouhi. Allegedly, Monsieur intended to buy fighter jet engine parts with Fotouhi without obtaining permission from the U.S. government.

Six countries meet to discuss concerns about Iran's nuclear program

Wednesday, the United States, France, Germany, China, Britain and Russia met to discuss Iran's nuclear program. Concerns that Iran is sticking with its nuclear program in spite of incentives offered last year have motivated the six countries to meet. The Iranian government has said that it has no plans to halt its nuclear program.
