US Steel Warns Pittsburgh Steeler Fans Not to Miss Work for the Super Bowl

It just doesn't seem right.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette steelworkers at several Pittsburgh-area mills have been warned through an official US Steel memo that if they are absent from work Sunday or Monday "without just cause" then they will face "severe disciplinary action."

So basically, US Steel is telling Pittsburgh Steeler fans that if they are scheduled to work they can't watch the Super Bowl, and if they do they could be fired.

The steel workers' union has already protested the memo and planned disciplinary action, and has even gone so far as to suggest that one of the executives who is behind the memo is a disgruntled Philadelphia Eagles fan.

I understand businesses not wanting to lose productivity, and I'm not a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, trying to prevent a steel worker Steelers fan from watching the Super Bowl just doesn't seem right to me, nor does it seem like good public relations policy for a steel company.

What do you think? Should steel workers be given some slack about watching the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Super Bowl or not?

They deserve to watch the Super Bowl, US Steel is how the Steelers got their name, what kind of a jerk would write a memo like that? Only a soreheaded fan whose team lost!

Of all businesses that should understand and give them a break it's the steel business besides it would be good PR if the were to go off line for an afternoon.

excellent ♥ Thanks for sharing - this is the kind of warning included in most work guides. I am sure someone can record the game and watch it later, like others with jobs do. The workers who actually have tickets most likely submitted vacation requests weeks ago, which should have been approved by now.
