Fifth Time May Be the Gold for Mark Grimmette

USA doubles team lugers Mark Grimmette and Brian Martin are representing the USA for their fourth Olympic Games in Vancouver in 2010. The doubles team lugers of Grimmette and Martin finished seventh in the World Cup held in Germany this year. Grimmette and Martin are the top American doubles luge team.

Mark Grimmette 38 hails from Muskegon, Michigan. This is Marks fifth Olympic Games. In the 1994 Lillihammer Games, Mark's luge doubles partner was then Jonathan Edwards. Mark started competing in the luge at the then new luge track in Muskegon, Michigan in 1984. I have personally gone down the Muskegon luge and even though it is one of the smaller luges in the USA, it was a thrilling experience. I cannot imagine going down a bigger luge at a much faster speed.

After trying the singles luge scene for a year, Mark joined up with Brian Martin from Palo Alto, California in 1996 and they have been a team professionally and personally since. During Mark Grimmette's and Brian Martin's career together they have won two Olympic medals (a bronze and silver), six World Championships medals and have won 11 World Cups. In the 2006 Torino Olympics, Grimmette and Martin were favored to win the gold but unfortunately crashed in the first run.

The Vancouver Olympic gold will be the icing on the cake for the 26 year veteran Mark Gimmette. USA Double Lugers Grimmette and Martin will have their chance on February 17, 2010. With Mark Grimmette being a home grown Luge Olympian, I have been following his career for quite a few years now. He has put smiles on the faces of the people that had the vision for the Muskegon Luge , I am sure. For Mark and Brian, I hope you have the slide of your life on February 17.

Cool to hear about this "home-town" connection. Muskegon is jut up north from us, as you know. I enjoyed reading about the team. hope you keep us informed concerning their competition.
