USA Vs. England Results Are In: It's a 1-1 Tie!

The USA vs. England results are in, after the playing of the hotly anticipated match-up this Saturday. USA and England tied 1-1 in a back and forth game, where surely both teams felt they could have been better. It was an exciting match-up, and there are a few important takeaways from the match.

The big story of the USA vs. England results is certainly the goaltending for both teams. Tim Howard of the US was phenomenal, and after an early goal got through, mostly due to porous defense, Howard came up big time and time again to stymie the English attack. At the other end of the pitch, English goaltender Robert Green let in a very soft goal that tied the game, showcasing what could be England's Achilles heel in attempting to win the 2010 World Cup.

Another major storyline from the USA vs. England game was that all-world English striker Wayne Rooney was largely a non-factor. He was controlled and kept out of action for the majority of the match. In the last 20 minutes or so he managed a few solid attacks, but nothing that resulted in a goal for his side.

The scoring opened up immediately, providing a worst case scenario for the US squad as England jumped to a 1-0 lead in just the fourth minute. English captain Steven Gerrard got the goal after a quick, short pass from Emile Heskey.

After the goal, the USA was clearly tentative, but was able to keep England from scoring again while eventually mounting a few attacks. They had some luck go their way when Clint Dempsey put a good strike on net that appeared to be stopped by English goaltender Rob Green, but he couldn't control the ball and it trickled into the net. Dempsey's goal came in the 40^th minute.

The USA opened up the second half with some great chances. Most notably, striker Jozy Altidore had a great look, streaking down the left side of the field and beating his defender. This time though, Green made a good save on the short post to keep the score tied.

The final portion of the game was mostly the USA holding off the English. England coach Fabio Capello changed the English strategy, putting three strikers up front, and the result was a great deal more pressure. However, Howard came up big with a series of great saves, and the US defense ultimately held tight when it needed to.

Of course, this was the most anticipated match in US soccer history. The USA relished their chance at being paired up with England in Group C of the 2010 World Cup, and it was even better that they got to play each other in the first game. Famously, the inexperienced, ragtag US squad of 1950 defeated powerhouse England in the Group Stage of that year's tournament.

Sixty years later, USA vs. England was back on center stage, but this team the US squad was ranked within the top 15 of the FIFA world rankings, and was expecting big things from their tournament. It was a statement game for both teams, with England looking to show they could win the whole tournament, and the USA looking to show they deserved to be taken seriously and could advance deep.

With the US tying England, they are now in great position to advance out of Group C in the 2010 World Cup. They will be favored to win their next two games, and somehow failing to advance beyond the group would be a monumental failure and collapse at this point. The US team also showed that they could compete with the best, as was their intention.

Meanwhile, England will walk away a bit stunned from their performance. While Green let in the easy goal, and that goaltending could be a major problem in later matches in the tournament, the team as a whole did not play excellently. They had more talent than the US but their successful moments came in bursts, with sub-par play in between.
