How I discovered Aloe Vera for Acne
I never had problems with acne until after having kids. Adult acne is embarrassing and I was desperate to find something natural to help fight it. Finally after a few years of frustration, I decided to try something out of the blue. I have a medicinal Aloe Vera plant in my house that I've had for a couple of years. I rarely use it, because I rarely have the need. I decided with the sores on my face that the aloe couldn't hurt, and would at least help heal my current sores.
After washing, I applied aloe directly from the leaf to cover my face. It created a yellowish film over my skin. This effect fades over time. I left this on for several hours the first day, and noticed a significant improvement in the feel of my skin and a reduction in redness and irritation. This is after only one treatment. I have continued to use this and notice a continuing improvement in my skin.
How does it work?
Aloe Vera is anti-inflammatory and antibacterial. It will create a film over your skin, sealing out dirt and bacteria. Because commercially sold aloe gels are generally diluted, Aloe Vera will work best on your acne straight from the plant. However, there are many different kinds of aloe, and not all are medicinal, so be sure to get a medicinal plant. Ask your garden nursery for help finding one if you are unsure.
What else should I know about using Aloe Vera to fight acne?
While Aloe Vera may not completely cure all acne, it will help significantly. It will reduce redness, pain, and can help heal old acne scarring. The aloe may also reduce the number of new pimples. Initial application may make your skin look yellow or greenish at first, so plan on trying this when you don't have to leave the house right away. If desired you can apply powder over the aloe after it has dried.
How exactly do I use it?
Wash your face with a mild soap and pat dry. Cut about an inch and a half piece of leaf from your aloe plant, and then cut up the side of the leaf so you can open it. I rub the leaf directly on the skin, but you can also scrape the inside of the leaf with your fingernail. Allow to dry on your skin. Leave as long as desired. Then you should wash the aloe off of your skin with the mild soap. Repeat as often as desired. I recommend waiting a couple days after the first application to make sure you don't have an allergy. After the initial few days, I would use this at least once a week, but not more than once per day.
