You can experiment by cooking something as simple vegetable soup. When the soup is done, divide it and add cabbage to one half. After the soup has cooked long enough for the cabbage to be tender, try a taste test. You will probably notice how much more flavor is in the vegetable soup with the cabbage added.
Cabbage and Soups
Cabbage soup is one thing, adding cabbage to other soups is another! Shred or chunk cabbage into your vegetable soup. It can take the place of potatoes. Add cabbage to your potato soup and notice how much more flavor it has. Add cabbage to broccoli cheese soup or use cabbage instead of broccoli or cauliflower in cheese soup!
Using Cabbage to Enhance Meat Dishes
For a change of pace, try adding cabbage to your meat dishes. The next time you make a meatloaf, spray the dish with non stick oil and add a couple of layers of cabbage. Lay your meatloaf on top and finish it off with two or more layers of cabbage. Top with foil and cook. The difference in flavor by using cabbage with the meatloaf is astounding!
Wrap cabbage around brats or hot dogs and bake. You can also slice the brats or hot dogs into a pan and add chopped or shredded cabbage to it. Cook until done and discover the difference that cabbage can bring to your meat dishes.
Using Cabbage in Dips
Vegetable dips will come to life if you add some chopped cabbage. Try a hot vegetable dip and add cooked cabbage to it. Tomatoes and cabbage really compliment each other. Make a taco dip and add chopped cabbage to it. The change in added flavor will amaze you. Of course you can make corned beef and cabbage and use it as a dip too!
Cabbage stores well and usually is very economical to use. You can freeze cabbage for later use. People use zucchini as a filler in recipes. It can take the place of potatoes for instance. Cabbage can be used in the same way. The difference is that cabbage will add a lot of flavor to your favorite dishes.
