When traveling overseas many cell phone carriers either do not work, or they charge an excessive amount per minute. Using your cell phone overseas is not all bad; there are ways of using it without breaking the bank. While it is convenient to use your cell phone when traveling, you should always check with your provider before you travel out of the country. You may want to be extremely cautious with children's cell phones, as many parents have found out; some companies are not that forgiving. Not only is it much more convenient for all family members to be only a phone call away. Also, having a cell phone with you can make an excellent tracking device for police should an emergency arise.

Bringing you cell phone overseas is not entirely useless. Texting usually does not fall under the same restrictions as phone calls. This makes using your cell phone overseas a very reasonable option and it can still be used as a way to keep track of everyone in the family. Of course it will also depend on your cell phone carrier whether you are able to pick up service where you are traveling. You may be able to pick up a Sim card from the country you are in, which may save you money. It is also possible to purchase a "pick up and go" phone from a local company that offers international rates. All of these options are reasonable, although they still do not offer the convenience of picking up your own cell phone overseas and making a call.

Texting with a cell phone overseas, you can still usually carry on a conversation, without being charged every minute. Texting also usually works in area where cell phones often fail. Of course you may be on a carrier that does not work in that country at all, or your carrier does not offer international texting. In cases like that, it is best to try and locate a local prepaid cell phone, and there is always the option of receiving calls at your hotel, or buying a calling card.

Using your cell phone overseas is possible, although you may find that you need to add some features to your phone. After checking with your local cell phone provider, texting may be the best option for communicating with family and friends. On a business trip that may not be a reasonable expectation. Although, many companies have international rate plans that will let you save money if you stay under a certain amount of international minutes. Using your cell phone overseas may be possible, although it may not be profitable in all cases.
