Use a Chili Throw Down to Raise Money for Charity

Throw Down with Bobby Flay is one of my favorite television shows on the Food Channel. Bobby travels across the United States and challenges other cooks that specialize in one particular food item. Now you can set up a same type of deal, at your local level and raise money for charity. This article will explain how to set up a Chili Throw Down.

First, pick a date and a place to host your throw down. Pick one recipe. In this case, make it chili. Set up a large outdoor tent. Place tables under the tent. You will need a lot of small bowls, spoons, trash cans and crackers (oyster). You need to make an application, with the rules on it for the contestants that enter the chili throw down.

Advertise the contest and ask for judges to sample and help out. Make sure that you tell them that there is a fee for becoming the judges of the contest. Tell them the fee covers for what they eat, but more than that, it goes right back to a charitable organization. When it comes to a Chili Throw Down, you will have many different judges. When you advertise, put it in the newspaper and on the local radio station.

One of the judges' requirements is that they must sample everyone's chili and rate them.

You can either sell soft drinks or bottled water if you desire to the judges.

Provide a place and a number for each entrant. Charge each entrant $20 to enter the contest. Winners of the contest get a trophy and their $20 back.

Each person that participates in the judging, and there are many of them, pay a $3 fee for tasting. Give them a scorecard with the 10 contestants on it by number. The judges go through and sample the chili. When they are finished, they rate each chili going from 10 to 1. Ten is the highest and one is the lowest.

Do not let the entrants provide a recipe of the ingredients. At the end of the competition, they can provide a recipe, to those that want them.

At the end of the competition, total the scores, the most points totaled wins the contest.

This can be a fun community event. It gives chili chefs a chance to show off their chili recipes. It gives individuals that love chili, a chance to taste many recipes. Finally, it raises money for your favorite charity.

Finally be sure to use the term "Chili Throw Down." It will bring a strong awareness to the event.

What a fun idea. Lots of small towns, churches and other organizations can use this idea. Well done.
