Use Cruise Control to Reduce Your Gas Mileage

Improve Mileage and Reduce Gas Costs with Cruise Control

D. A. Garrido
By using cruise control you can improve your gas mileage without sacrificing anything.

Note that this article should not replace information by automotive manufacturers or mechanics on how to use cruise control. The descriptions here are to illustrate how cruise control can be used to reduce your gasoline usage by maximizing the mileage you get on your car. Check your owner's manual or consult a mechanic to learn how to use your car's specific cruise control system.

Cruise control adjusts the speed of your car by controlling the throttle position. In laymens terms, it means it provides a more constant feed of fuel to your car than you would when you supply gas by pressing the gas pedal. The consistent provision of fuel is what improves your fuel economy.

Note that cruise control only regulates the gas- you control all steering and braking and need to continue to stay alert while driving.

By using cruise control, according to Edmonds.com, you can save up to 14 % of your fuel costs, with 7% saving being the average savings achieved by using cruise control.

First, learn how the cruise control on your car works. The directions are in your owners manual. Note that cruise control should not be used on wet roads, because hydroplaning can occur and cause you to skid.

Cruise control should be turned on when you are in a hilly environment, or going up or down large hills. In the case of hills, cruise control can use more gas.

Most car related websites recommend cruise control to save on gas. Sites like www.fueleconomy.gov ,and Edminds.com recommend and explain the use of cruise control and the different cruise control features.

Enhance your savings by being sure your tires are properly inflated for another free way to improve mileage. And lighten the load. Take excess weight out of your car and you'll further enhance your mileage.

When you turn off your cruise control, drive sensibly. No sudden stops and starts. By avoiding unnecessary braking and accelerations, you can save another 5-10 percent.

Above all, don't exceed the speed limit. Save money and stay safe. You can get up to 20% more mileage by driving at 55 than at 75MPH, according to goodwrench.com.

Without spending a dime, you can make a few small changes along with learning to use cruise control and you can see substantial savings in your fuel bill.
