There are plenty of ideas that could be utilized here, but one that springs immediately to mind is the hand painted ceramic. No, we are not talking about the lop-sided clay pots we all made in art class. Instead, we are talking about a piece of pottery that has been fired and is ready to paint. You can find these pretty easily, from a pottery shop to the local craft store to even one of the newest rages, a pottery café, where you can paint and enjoy a cup of coffee for a low price. Most pieces are inexpensive as is the paints and you can take your time selecting something that your dad would like - say, a gargoyle, or dragon, or beagle dog. Take you time to paint it and then add your initials to the bottom with the year and spray it with clear finish. Your father will appreciate the thought you put into selecting the piece and the way you painted it.
If you have the gift of writing, compose a story or poem for your father. You can then calligraphy it on a nice piece of parchment paper or print it off the computer in a colored and unusual font. Mat and frame it in your father's favorite colors and make sure that you include your name on it as the author and the year you wrote it. This is truly a gift from the heart that shows your creativity and love.
Finally, make your dad a video. Gather up as many family pictures as possible - from your dad as a baby through today - and scan them into your home computer. Using a video editing program - consider Roxio or Microsoft Movie Maker - layout the photos on the timeline and add a song, creating a music video of his life. If you have enough photos to do themed videos, make a Christmas one or Halloween one. Create a nice menu screen with chapters he can select and save it to a DVD. Add a creative sticker to it, and if you really want to present it well, put together a liner notes that go in the jewel case. He will love it so much that he will watch it over and over again.
The only limit in giving your father a personalized Father's Day gift is your imagination. The more unique the item is, the more your dad will cherish it because he will know it came straight from your heart.
