First you need to gather your supplies. You will need the following:
Painters tape
Paint drop cloth
Paint Roller and cover in desired nap
Paint Tray
Painters sponge
Paint brush
Silk paint in white
Latex paint in white and the color of blue you want
Wallpaper paste
Pencil
Make sure you are working in a well ventilated area and that the surface you are working on has been cleaned and thoroughly dried.
First you want to put up your painters tape and place your drop cloth on the floor and on top of existing items in the room you cannot move that you do not want paint to get onto.
Use your paint roller to apply a coat of white latex paint. Allow to dry and apply a second coat. Allow to dry.
Dip your sponge into the blue paint and use a circular motion to apply in all areas where you would like to create the sky. If you are doing the entire space, then apply over all areas. You do not want to cover the paint with blue but rather mottle it to create a sky effect. Allow to dry. Repeat and allow to dry.
Now you want to use a pencil to very lightly sketch cloud formations, or if you are comfortable, you can do this step by eyeballing it.
Mix together two parts silk paint in white to two parts wallpaper paste. Dip paintbrush into mixture and use to dimple or stipple the surface. Do not add color to your brush unless necessary as the fading of color will make your clouds appear more authentic. Use the outline of your clouds you penciled in or do it by eye. Allow to dry.
Apply the silk white paint again with a paint brush, stippling or dimpling it where you think it needs more depth. Create highlights and edges by dabbing the tip of the paintbrush along the clouds where you would like it to go. Allow to dry thoroughly.
Remove painters tape. You should now have a light and airy sky look on your wall. If you wish to practice, you can do so on a spare piece of drywall or wood until you are comfortable that you will create the look you would like to have.
