Organic gardening can be frustrating for those who give up too quickly. Perhaps last year's organic gardening harvest was meager. That does not indicate failure. In many cases it takes a few seasons to get into the routine of successful organic gardening. It also helps to know a few tips. Here are some ways to improve this year results over last year.
Grow Vegetables Vertically
There are a number of vegetables that can be grown vertically. This can be an immense space saver in a garden. Some of the best vegetables to do this with grow on vines. Some examples include squash, green beans and peas.
Work on Soil Improvement
A true hallmark of a fine gardener is one who can take existing soil and improve it. One good way to do this is through composting. Composting is feeding the soil and enhancing the nutrients within it. It is convenient to do this with a composting bin. These can normally be purchased in catalogs.
Protect Seedlings from the Elements
It cannot be emphasized enough how important it is to protect young plants. When plants are very young they are susceptible to death from a number of ways. Too much wind, too much sun, not enough water, pests and birds all contribute to their demise. It is good to shelter them in some sort of structure such as a greenhouse, cold frame or even inside the house until they are less delicate.
Well- Spaced Plantings
Although gardeners are always seeking to use space wisely, still it is not good to crowd plants. Be sure that the plantings are well-spaced. Be sure to follow directions on the seed packet when it comes to how far apart seeds should be spaced. If not, the plant will not be able to grow properly and will be stunted in size. It is also difficult for crowded plants to bear a proper harvest.
Growing vegetables up vertically can totally transform the space available in a garden. Never neglect the condition of the soil as this can be the difference between failure and success. When plants are young, they must be protected from the harsh elements of too much sun, wind and rain. Finally, make sure that seed is not planted too closely together. Make sure these organic gardening tips are at use in your garden today.
