People have to start remembering that their turn signal is there for a reason and if they don't understand its importance then they could end up costing themselves in the end. If you think it isn't a problem of you doing it, but rather you forget to do it, then get into the habit of doing it so that if you don't do it you are annoyed at yourself. It's not so much that you start to become OCD about it or something like that, but rather you feel like if you don't do it you have done something bad, and to point this out, you pretty much have by breaking the law.
Another thing to remember is when to use it. I see a lot of drivers decide to turn their turn signal on right before they are about to turn. This doesn't really affect me, because I always try to be the proper distance away, but drivers have to realize that even the best drivers get distracted and can get to close and they may not be able to react in time and may cause an accident. You have to remember that the best rule of thumb is to give plenty of warning that you are about to turn, allowing the motorist behind you to correct themselves and allow for the proper space. This keeps both them and you from injury and enforces proper procedure into your routine.
As long as your know what to expect from others out on the road, you should be fine. The better you protect against injury, the better chance you have of coming home each day safe. The safer you are the better chance you have of enforcing the same type of driving onto those around you and causing other drivers to realize their own errors in driving as well. Make sure you know your directions well and know your area. The last thing you want to do is flip on your turn signal in a busy area and then make a sharp sudden turn. This could cause an accident and is for sure not the thing you want to have to deal with.
