If you have a large wall in your home that is too big for a painting or picture to cover, a wall quilt may be just the solution. You can customize quilts to your taste. Choose color schemes, fabrics, and themes that you enjoy. You can even rotate the quilts seasonally to spice up your home décor.
Another great option for wall quilts is to use family photos as part of the quilt. But how can I use family photos in a quilt you might ask? You can actually print your photos onto special 8.5 x 11-inch paper-backed fabric. You can then incorporate these fabric photos into a quilt.
If you have an heirloom quilt but don't have a bed for it, then display it proudly in your home as a wall quilt. Be sure to purchase a quilt hanging system that does not damage the quilt. Look for compression racks that gently hold the quilt without harming the fabric or stitching.
Where Can I Get a Wall Quilt?
If you or someone you know can sew, why not try to make your own? Start with a small quilt to see if it is a hobby that you enjoy. You can find patterns at local quilt shops or fabric stores. If you don't sew, then you can still get a wall quilt that fits your home perfectly. Many quilters accept commissions. To find a quilter, visit a local quilt shop for a list of names.
Other wonderful places to purchase pre-made quilts are quilt shows or fairs. These events typically occur during spring and summer. Quilters will often display quilts for sale. One of my favorite quilt shows is the Sister's Outdoor Quilt Show in Sisters, Oregon. This picturesque mountain town holds one of the largest outdoor quilt shows during the second Saturday of July. People travel from across the country to visit this special event. If you can't visit, you could call and inquire about quilts for sale.
Finally, check out county and state fairs for great deals on handmade quilts. You can turn any quilt into a wall quilt if you have the space for it.
How Much Should I Expect to Pay for a Wall Quilt?
The price will depend on the size of the quilt, the technique, and materials used. For example, some quilting techniques are more time-consuming than others so you can expect to pay the quilter more for her or his time. (Yes, there are men who quilt!). You may expect to pay anywhere from $100 to over $1000 to pay a quilter for her time, expertise, and materials.
You may be able to trade for a wall quilt. If you have a skill or trade, consider trading for a quilt.
Quilts can add charm, beauty, warmth, and elegance to your home. They help keep the heat inside rather than escaping through poorly insulated walls. Quilts enhance your home's appearance, particularly in challenging areas such as large walls, space spaces, or oddly shaped spaces.
