Used Gym Equipment: A Good Option for Gym Owners

Emma Jacobs
The world economy, America's financial straits have put a lid on the way small businesses such as fitness centers have traditionally found access to finances to bankroll their plans. Large fitness franchise chains are slowing down for want of access to cheap loans for expansions or renovations. Even so, fitness centers do have to keep themselves competitive, with new equipment; and they do sell off the old to make way for the new even in this business climate. There are other fitness centers that go under and put up their equipment in the classifieds. Some fitness centers today take advantage of the current scenario and shop for used equipment in good condition to stay afloat and to continue to attract customers.

Pre-owned, or refurbished fitness equipment, as they are more flatteringly known, are very abundantly and cheaply available today. With large gym chains closing down presences in less profitable areas, with banks repossessing gym equipment from businesses that are unable to keep up with their payments, there could not be a better time for a gym owner to stock up on great equipment on the cheap. There are new businesses that are springing up all around that warehouse and sell used brand name fitness equipment from companies such as Precor and Cybex.

People who wish to buy great gym equipment for their homes and families could find no better time to make good on their dream. The easy availability of great used equipment also allows small hotels, college athletes and others gain access to equipment that would otherwise always be out of their reach. For those looking for excellent quality on a budget, looking around for a well-established dealer of repute for used equipment is an excellent plan. You mustn't think that the dealers just pluck equipment out of a gym that is closing down and try to make as much money off it is possible. Used equipment is required to be given a thorough inspection by the manufacturer before going on the market again. Parts are replaced where they need to be, and paint and cosmetic touch-up jobs are done.

You could get equipment that is no more than a couple of years old for about half the price.
Prices for used equipment are not set in stone; there is always a lot of room for negotiation. If you buy more than just one machine, you can have better negotiating leverage. Many times, dealers are just happy to free up some space in the warehouse. If you have large order in mind, you have even better negotiating power. They can ask for discounts or incentives. Making a great deal always requires that you think out of the box a bit; try playing the used equipment field a bit, and come out the better for it.
