Used Video Games - the Cheap Alternative

Perhaps the biggest downside to being a fan of video games, whether PC or console-based, is the cost of new games. This hasn't slowed down the explosion of the video game market, from Atari's Pong in the '70s to the latest version of Madden Football or Call of Duty today. Regardless of whether you are playing PC-based games or ones made for Wii, Xbox, PlayStation and other game consoles, you have no doubt flinched at the price of new releases. Since many of the games involve licensing of likenesses and other materials, the cost rises exponentially.

Fortunately, there are cheaper alternatives, ones where you can feed your video game jones and save a little green at the same time. The used video game market is a major cottage industry, one in which gamers can find practically anything they are seeking. There is no end to the array of items available, with used games including those made for various consoles, PCs, not to mention Macintoshes. Some of these games may actually rekindle memories of your childhood, since there are even modern versions of such classics as Asteroids and Space Invaders available in used form. It's often true that what's old is new again. You may even want to try tracking down some of the old throwback gaming systems just for the fun of it. No doubt they'll remind you of younger days and just how far video games have come.

Many options exist in the search for old video games, the most obvious ones being online sources or the local brick and mortar gaming store. If you're willing to dig a little deeper, you may find some gems at local flea markets or swap meets, as well as garage sales. The catch there though is you may get a steal but the chances of being scammed are higher since there's probably no way to test the game before you buy it. Buying used games online has its risks as well, since there are plenty of shady websites that are ready and willing to prey on unsuspecting gamers. But on the upside, many sites are reputable enough to money back guarantees within a certain timeframe and the selection of used games online is nearly limitless. If you can't find it online, it probably just doesn't exist.

The most trouble-free method of acquiring used games is your local gaming outlet. Many of these stores buy back used games and sometimes even put them on consignment. They don't accept anything without ensuring that the game is working perfectly, that the graphics run as expected and there are no skips or jumps in the game operation. Perhaps most importantly, before buying a used game at one of these stores, always insist on testing the game yourself, to be sure for yourself of the game's condition.

The sweet thing about searching for used games online or at the local game shop is that no matter which way you choose you are going to find deep discounts. You'll probably be able save 50% or perhaps even more over the original retail price of a video game. That will certainly add a good deal more weight to your pocketbook and provide you hours of entertainment.

Buying old video games is a great way to deepen your appreciation and love for the hobby. You may gain a new respect for some of the old classics and you definitely will save some serious money. Sure, you won't be the first on your block to own the newest version of Grand Theft Auto or the latest upgrade for Warcraft. But what's more important: owning the last and greatest games or paying the rent?
