These are some useful expressions used in everyday conversational Spanish and some of the most widely used cognates in the Spanish language. The cognates have similar meaning and spelling in the English language, which makes them easier to remember. Learning these expressions and cognates will better your conversational skills.

Formal and Informal Situations

A formal situation is when you are speaking with a person with whom you have a formal relationship. This includes teachers, older relatives, bosses, co-workers, and older adults.

An informal situation is used when you know the person well. This includes friends, classmates, and family members.

Señor - Mr./Sir

Señora - Mrs., ma'am

Hola - hello

Adiós - goodbye

Buenos días - good morning

Buenas tardes - good afternoon

This expression is usually used to get someone's attention or to ask forgiveness.

Con permiso - excuse me

This phrase is usually used to ask permission to pass through a crowd of people.
