The first and foremost aspect is to adjust your body clock to the new time cycle that is almost around 12 hours away from the time cycle in the USA. You have to start your preparations right from the stage you board the flight from the USA. As soon as you board your flight, set your clock to the time of India and start doing your activities based on that time. That means if it is a day time in India, do not sleep and keep yourself engaged in various types of entertainments of your choice. Try to take maximum amount of protein in your food during the flight. Also, make sure to consume lot of water during the flight, avoiding hard liquors like Whisky, Rum, and Vodka that can cause dehydration. Keep walking in the aircraft every couple of hours and also perform the stretching exercises while seating. As soon as you land at your final destination in India, start doing activities based on the time at your final destination in India. Never go to sleep if it is a daytime at your destination in India. Involve yourself in the activities of your choice and make sure to remain awake till the regular sleeping hours come. If possible, you may take short walks near-by and keep yourself active. Also, make sure to remain light on food but consume maximum liquids like lemon water or the plain water. You can take a light sedative while sleeping, may be for couple of nights. This will help you to get some good sound sleep in spite of large time difference. A cold shower at the time of sleeping would also help. Try to avail good night's sleep at least for initial couple of nights so that your body clock adjusts quickly to the new cycle. Always take hot water baths, at least for a couple of days. This will start a quick circulation of the energy in the body and remove the dullness from your system.
You must start taking malaria preventive medicines prior to two weeks of your departure, one tablet of Chloroquin per week. You must continue taking this tablet for initial two weeks of your stay in India. Try to stay in an air-conditioned room to protect you against the mosquitoes. If this is not possible, make sure to use mosquito's preventive medicine spraying device that is electrically operated. Such gadgets are available at a very nominal rate of around Rs.100 ($2.5) at most of the cities at the general provision stores. Always make sure to consume bottled drinking mineral water as the water purity may be really bad at times in India. The major diseases like Cholera, Dehydration, Zondish, and Typhoid are getting spread through water only. You should not visit roadside dhabas serving food items. Make sure to take your food in standard restaurants only and try to consume hot, boiling food, rather than cold stored food. Never try unknown food items unless you are sure of its ingredients. Make sure to drink as much water as possible during the day. The minimum water intake should be around 3 liters per day. The food must be taken at the small time intervals of around 2 to3 hours, rather than heavy food twice a day. Try to avoid sleeping during afternoon hours, at least for initial couple of weeks. This would help you to get sound sleep during the night.
The clothes selection also plays an important role to get adjusted quickly. Wear light cotton clothes in lighter shades if it is summer and light woolen clothes if it is winter. Try to perform yoga and pranayama for at least 20 minutes everyday in the morning. Some meditation for around 20 minutes can also help tremendously to boost up your spirits. Whatever may happen, try to remain cheerful, keeping your morale high. Your main enemies in this adjustment process are the biological body clock and the impure, dusty environment. Dusty environment can be fought by wearing the suitable mask against your face, covering nose. Also, wear suitable head protection like cap during high summer. Keep on spraying cold water in your eyes, at least 3 to 4 times a day.
If you follow these simple standard tips while visiting India, you will be able to adjust yourself very quickly to the new changed environment without any problems.
