You know doubt have a busy life if you're raising even just one child on your own. You need to learn how to balance your busy life. Accept help from either family or friends. If you need to run some errands see if your neighbor doesn't mind watching the kid for a little while. Most families that have a single parent on some side of it are very understanding and sensitive to this issue. Take advantage of this when you can. Have your mother or father come over if they are local - they'll be happy to take care of their grandchild for a while.
Take advantage of community resources when possible. Most communities offer some kind of playgroup for children, classes on effective parenting and after-school activities. If you can find a constructive set of activities for your child to participate in through the day, this will allow you to either work more to put food on the table or finish up those errands you keep putting off. These kinds of day activities can also help your child to make new friends and learn to mature within varying social environments - as a single parent this can be difficult for you to provide on your own.
If you happen to feel that you're not spending enough time with your child you have several options. Some employers will let you bring your kid to work from time to time. You can also ask to work more flexible hours. It's not uncommon for an employer to be flexible in this area if it means their employees are going to be in a better mental state throughout more of the day.
Your kid still needs to be a kid, so don't forget to plan a fun activity every once in a while. Take them to the local zoo or even a movie. The rigors of a single parent can often lead to spending less and less fun time with your children. Kids need this, and so do you. You may not realize how much you really need this until you start having a bit more fun with your kids.
Make sure to take time for yourself, even it that means waiting until your kids are asleep. Read a book; watch the news - anything that you are doing for yourself that you enjoy. It's paramount that you don't lose sight of the importance of indulging in those things that make you happy outside of your children.
Most importantly, since you're the only parent around you will be the most important role model for your kids. Set a loving and positive example every day.
