Useless Baby Products

Christie Silvers
There are so many baby products out there on store shelves that many new parents think that they must have them all in order to be good parents and/or to make their lives and their baby's life easier. Unfortunately, many find out, after spending too much money, that many of these so-called "helpful" baby products are downright useless and a waste of their hard earned money. Here are a few useless baby products that many of my fellow mothers have decided are completely pointless and a waste of money.

Small Baby Bibs- Why is there such a thing as a small baby bib? Did the creator of these tiny things actually know what bobs are suppose to be used for? A bib is suppose to be big enough to protect the baby's clothing from food, drinks, drool and whatever else comes their way. Those small baby bibs do none of those. They are too small to cover anything except maybe a few buttons on a button-up shirt. If you need bibs then go for the ones that are huge and cover from shoulders to belly button. THOSE actually do their job.

The Diaper Genie- The Diaper Genie is one of those products that were all the rage when it first appeared on the market. Everyone thought it was a miracle baby product that every household would love. Unfortunately, many mothers soon realized that they did not love it as much as they thought they would. The mothers I spoke with said that the Diaper Genie was bad about allowing odor to escape, was difficult to handle and even more difficult to clean out after you have a long string of wrapped dirty diapers to take out of it. All in all, the majority of the mothers who had used the Diaper Genie felt that it was a useless baby product that was a waste of money. It's much easier to just wrap a dirty diaper in a plastic grocery bag and throw it in your outside trash can.

Baby Hair Brushes- Baby hair brushes are usually one of those little things that everyone thinks that they will need. You get them at your baby shower, they come in cute little matching comb/brush sets or you get a free one from the hospital. When you step back and think about it, just how many newborn babies really have enough hair to really brush? Many babies won't even have enough brushable hair until around the age of one. The only use that I have discovered for a baby hair brush, during my many years of mothering, is for helping to clear cradle cap from my babies' heads.

Wipes Warmers- You are walking down the baby aisle at your favorite store and you come across something called a wipes warmer. You think, "Wow, that's a neat idea." so you buy it and take it home. The day after you put your baby wipes in it it you notice that they are all dried out and even a brown color. Yep that was from your wipes warmer. Most of the mothers I spoke with swore that their wipes warmers were a definite waste of money and a useless baby product. While it's a good idea in theory, most wipes warmers also dry out the baby wipes, which of course defeat the purpose of a baby wipe.

Baby Powder- Baby powder is on every baby aisle. It smells good, it's right next to the baby shampoo and you remember hearing your mother talking about putting powder on your little baby behind when you were and infant. So why is it a useless baby product when it seems like the natural thing to buy when shopping for baby supplies? Because it is recommended that parents do not use baby powder on their babies any longer. It's easily inhaled by your little one if you use it, which can cause respiratory problems. Plus if you do use it on your baby's bottom then it's just going to get all clumpy and yucky as soon as they wet their diaper the first time. It's best to stick to baby lotion and forget about the powder.

Baby Bath Robes- Baby bath robes are such a useless baby product. Most parents, and babies, are more comfortable just wrapping their baby up in a bath towel. Also, the majority of baby bath robes are too short to cover their little legs. What's the first thing that happens when you get out of the shower? You get cold from the room temperature air. No baby wants to wait for you to put a bath robe on them when you can quick wrap a warm, cozy bath towel around their little body.

Crib Bedding Sets- You walk through the baby stores and there are many, many cute matching bed sets for your baby's crib. They all come with the cute sheets, bumper pads, dust ruffles and comforter. Everything perfectly coordinated and just gorgeous. You spend a small fortune on your favorite one, only to see on television once you get home that you should not be using a bumper pad in your crib or cover your infant with the comforter. Both of these items can pose a suffucation hazard for little ones. So what's the point in spending all of that money to buy a whole matching crib set when you can't even use half of it?

These are only a few of the useless baby products that I heard about while talking to other mothers about this topic. There are so many out there that it would be difficult to list them all. Also keep in mind that something other mothers may find useless could end up being a lifesaver for you and your baby. If you are unsure about a product it is best to listen to consumer reviews, talk to other mothers who have used the product and, if possible, borrow the product from another mother who has it. That will keep you from spending money on a product that may not be for you.

This is so true. I would add "receiving blankets" to the list. My husband and I couldn't figure out why we had such a hard time swaddling our newborn until we learned that the receiving blankets we had bought were 1/2 the size of swaddle blankets. For the crib bumper, I tied mine to the outside of the crib below the mattress for decoration.

Dead wrong about the diaper genie...it is the BEST! Hate the thought of wasting a plastic bag with EACH dirty diaper- or having to walk to my outside trashcan in February! I find it odor free in my sons room and the genie is very easy to use. One of my best purchases!

I'm laughing because I've had the same thought of so many of these things.. useless. Also useless- little tiny clothing. They outgrow it in two weeks. :)

Good advice. I am trying to make a checklist for what items I will need for a new baby and it is a bit overwhelming figuring out what is really necessary and what isn't. This article helped me eliminate some of the items off of my list, so thanks!

pacifiers- useless. they teach your baby how to shut up and discourage talking, in my opinion. my kids definitely took after me as a talker- they spit out pacifiers after 2 days *lol* We also found that teddy bear with the heartbeat was no replacement for a real one. And brand-name baby shoes. Unless you like to waste 40 bucks every month (let gramma do it!) b/c of rapid growth, dont' by 'em.

Great article! My oldest son actually had his head stuck under the crib bumber when he was about 5 months old. Thankfully I happened to check on him right then and he was fine. I threw the bumper away immediately and I tell people all the time not to buy one! I mean, really, if you think about it, a baby isn't going to roll into the crib hard enough to hurt himself anyway. And, if he does get a bumped head that is much better than suffucation! You can recover from a bump on the head.

Super article. Please add 'small' blankies to the list. I received some that wouldn't fully cover my preemie! I made good money unloading the Diaper Genie to a family that didn't cloth diaper though, LOL. :)

Great article, I agree with just about everything you said here, except about the baby hair brush and combs, because all of my kids were born with a lot of hair. My daughter had black curly hair that came all the way down to her shoulders. It was very fine and thick. Now though her hair is thick and blond. (all of my kids have blond hair) My dh and me both have dark hair...

I'd go so far as to add bottles, pacifiers, and strollers... but I'm crunchy like that. :-P Great article.
