Uses for Index Cards

T. Jay Kane
The fact that index cards can be used to make homemade flash cards is fairly common knowledge. Overlooked uses for index cards include:

Personal Card Games: Use index cards to create your own card based games or draw a set of traditional cards when a deck can't be found.

Write a Novel: Index cards are great for creating story boards and keeping track of scene changes. They can easily be rearranged and moved around if needed.

Keep an Appointment: Arrange index cards by date to keep track of appointments. They can be carried in a wallet or purse to serve as a reminder of upcoming appointments every time they are looked at.

Interactive Book Marks: Use index cards as you read your favorite books to keep your place and make notes about the book without writing on the pages.

Ace your Presentation: Write bullet points on index cards to use as you deliver a speech or presentation.

Keep Track of Recipes: Index cards make great recipe cards. Never worry about forgetting an important ingredient again.

Keep Track of Collections: Collectors can organize their collections by keeping notes and pricing information on index cards that can be referenced while keeping collector's items safe in storage.

Study Your History: Index cards are great for creating family trees and organizing family information in an easy to track format.

Keep Track of Passwords: Organize account and password information on index cards. Just remember to store in a secure location.

Learn a Foreign Language: Write one new word on an index card a day and study from your increasing stack of index cards to improve your foreign language vocabulary over time.

Organize Expenses: Write your payment amount and due date on one side and the payee information on the other. As bills are paid move cards from one location to another. Who needs automatic payment?

In the Garden: Use index cards as informational stakes to keep track of when and where you've planted your seeds.

Remember Business Contacts: Use index cards as a portable Rolodex to remember important information about business clients.

As you can see, index cards are much more useful than most folks would give them credit for.
