Uses for Left Over Yarn

Deborah Anderson
Left over yarn may not be something that too many people have today. Used to be that many people had left over yarn as lots of people, usually women, were known to crochet and/or knit using yarn. This is simply not the case today. Today not as many people have the time or patience to enjoy these hand sewing techniques. But if you are one of these people who do enjoy crocheting or knitting, what do you do with that left over yarn you seem to always have once you finish a project?

Of course, you could crochet or knit a scarf or an afghan with all that yarn, you know one that has many colors. Heck, it could even have many designs. Just use your imagination and get busy with those needles. I am sure nearly every one that crochets or knits has done this at one time or another. I know I have, as have the ladies in my family who are or were crocheters. But besides these projects, what else can be done using yarn?

You can make pom-poms out of left over yarn. This is very simple and the pom-poms are cute. All you need is a small piece of cardboard, a pair of scissors and the left over yarn. Wrap the yarn around the cardboard at least 20 times. The more times you wrap and the larger the cardboard the larger the pom-pom will be. When you are finished wrapping the yarn around the cardboard, cut the yarn. Now run the yarn through all the loops you have just made on one end of the cardboard, pull it tight and tie it. Take the yarn off the cardboard and cut the other loops at the opposite end of where you tied the yarn. Now you have a pom-pom. These pom-poms are handy for many projects themselves. You can use them to accent a crafting project, such as a scarf or some other project you have just finished. They can also be used for a cat toy. Cats love them because they are light and they can get their claws in them. A pom-pom will keep a cat occupied for quite some time.

Left over yarn also makes excellent ribbon to use on a wrapped gift. Depending on the color, the yarn can be used for any occasion from birthdays to Christmas. Add a pom-pom to the package and it is really dressed up with a very personal touch.
