Uses for Lemons: How to Use Lemons for Cooking, Eating and Drinking

Got Lemons? Here Are Some Ideas for How to Use Them

Amy Solovay
I used to have two lemon trees growing in my backyard. Since I had lemons to spare, I've been able to find many interesting uses for them. Need some ideas for how to use lemons? Try these!

Salty Avocados With Lemon

This is my favorite use for lemons. Slice a fresh lemon into quarters. Take a raw, whole avocado. Slice it in half and remove the pit. Squeeze lemon juice onto the avocado. Add a bit of salt, and eat it with a spoon. Add more lemon and more salt as needed. Yum!

This makes a great replacement for cooked vegetables; what an easy, and delicious way to increase your intake of raw fruits and vegetables. It's one of the simplest appetizers ever.

Honey Lemons

This idea is not for the faint-of-heart, but it's another one of my favorite ways to use lemons. If you like sour candy (remember sour patch kids?) perhaps you'll enjoy this. If not, you might want to pass.

Peel a lemon like you would peel an orange. Divide it into segments. Drizzle honey over each segment, and eat it. Or, alternatively, dip each segment in honey. This is an intensely flavorful treat that I enjoy more than candy. It's also much healthier than most candies are.

Lemon Juice Salad Dressing

Lemon juice makes a fantastic low-calorie, lowfat salad dressing. Instead of drowning your salads in fattening dressing, squeeze a bit of lemon over top of each bite. This works particularly well with sweet salad ingredients such as carrots, iceberg lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes. I enjoy lemon as a dressing on top of spinach salads as well.

Broiled Fish With Lemon

Squeeze lemon juice on top of any broiled fish dish. Lemon compliments fish perfectly. You can add other seasonings as well. In my opinion fish needs very little seasoning other than lemon, but your fish will be delicious if you want to add onions, garlic, pepper, or other seasonings. Breaded Fish With Lemon

Many seafood restaurants serve breaded fish with fresh lemon.

Lemon Water

My favorite restaurants all serve water garnished with lemon slices. Why not try this at home too? Treat your loved ones to a fine-dining experience right at home. This is such an easy way to make sure everyone gets a dose of natural vitamin C.

Lemon Tea

Lemon is the perfect complement to many different kinds of teas. It's great with either hot tea or iced tea, and works well with many different herbal teas and tisanes.
