Uses for an Old Door

Deborah Anderson
What can you do with an old door? This may not be a question that you ask yourself on a daily basis, but you might occasionally ask it. Especially if you have an old door in your garage or store room. Luckily, there are several answers to this question and they are all relatively easy projects.

A folding screen can be made by using hinges to attach several doors together. After attaching the doors with the hinges, the entire screen can either be painted or it can be wallpapered to match the décor where it will be placed.

A bench can be made quickly by simply placing the old door on cinder blocks. The height of the bench can be determined by the person putting this together.

A desktop can be made out of an old door provided the old door is a flat, solid one. Use the old door for the top of the desk and use file cabinets or other types of items for the legs. Cinder blocks would even work for this project as well. A desktop made out of an old door is the perfect desktop for a computer, copy machine or any other bulky office equipment.

An old door can also be turned into a work surface. This is simple to make provided you have a pair of sawhorses. Simply place the door across the sawhorses and you have your new work surface.

If you find yourself needing more room at the dining table, an old door may just be the answer. To complete this project you will need a flat, solid door, a smaller table, some thin rubber gloves and a table cloth that is larger than the door. Place the rubber gloves between the smaller table and the old door then throw the table cloth over the entire table.

With a little imagination, an old door and some large pieces of Styrofoam a raft can be made. Take the old door, attach two large pieces of Styrofoam on the underside of the door and enjoy.

Do you need a temporary ramp? If so, take that old door from the storage room and place it on the incline or step where you need a ramp.

As you can see, there are many uses for that old door. Even though most of these are temporary, the good thing is the door can be used over and over and for more than one project.
