Uses for an Old Mailbox

Deborah Anderson
Ever see something that you wonder what you could do with it if you had it? This may seem like a strange question, but have you? Sometimes we come across things, either in our store room or at a garage sale, that could lead us to this question. Mailboxes are one of the items that could easily be the subject of this question, especially if you happen to find one that you have forgotten about or have had the opportunity to switch out the one you use for a newer or different one. So now what are you going to do with that mailbox you just found?

Finding new uses for an old mailbox may not be something that is done everyday, but it can be done. That old mailbox does not have to be thrown away just because you do not get your mail in it anymore. There are times when it can be used in the garden, in the kitchen or even by a child.

In the garden, a mailbox can be used for storing small items that a garden will need when tending to their plants. This is a good place for gloves, seeds and even some small hand tools. The mailbox can be decorated and place in such a way that it will become part of the garden décor. All you need is a little imagination to make this use for the old mailbox one of your favorites. Also, another use for a mailbox in the garden would be as a birdhouse. Simply open the door and welcome the new residents into their new home. You could also decorate the mailbox where it will fit in better with the garden area, then place it in a tree or on a pole where the birds will be sure to use it.

In the kitchen, a mailbox can be used as a breadbox. All you have to do is clean the mailbox then decorate it if you wish. Bread and other snacks can easily be placed in the mailbox. This may be a good idea for a camp or lake house because it would protect the bread and snacks from critters that would like to eat them as well.

If your child has a train, an old mailbox will work great as a train tunnel. All you have to do is cut both ends out of the mailbox and place it so that the train tracks can be placed in it then allow the train to travel through it. Your kids will love it, no matter what their age. This train tunnel can also be decorated if you want to let your little train engineer do it.
