Uses for an Old Window Screen

Most homeowners will face the problem of replacing window screens at some point in their life. So if you are one of these homeowners, what will you do with the old window screen? Will you find another use for it or will you simply throw it away. If you decide to use it, what will you do with it? Well, there are several things that an old window screen is perfect for including gardening, laundry and in other areas of your home.

Window screens that have been replaced are most popularly used in the garden area of a home. In the garden they are perfect as protection for bulbs and seeds. Young bulbs and recently planted seeds are one of the favorite foods on the menu for birds and rodents. They will help themselves to your freshly planted garden if you do not do something to protect your bulbs and seeds from them. To create a protection barrier from them all you have to do is take some scrap lumber and make a frame out of it then put the old window screen on the wooden frame. Now just lay it over the area in the garden that you are trying to protect. You do not even have to have the wooden frame if you do not have the materials to make one, just lay the screen over the area where the seeds or bulbs have been planted and use rocks to keep the window screen in place.

Another use for an old window screen in the garden is when you need a sieve to clean sand or topsoil. Once again, old scraps of lumber can be used to build a wooden frame to put the window screen on, which will make the sieve sturdier when it is being used, but, as above, you do not have to build a frame if you do not want to or do not have the materials to build the frame. Place the window screen over an area where you want the clean sand or topsoil to go, sometimes a wheel barrow works best for this. Now simply pour the dirty sand or topsoil onto the window screen, shake the window screen to help the sand or soil go through the screen.

An old window screen can also be used as a place to dry things, such as hand washables. To create this drying rack, all you need is a clean sheet and some crates or stools to support the drying rack. You also need to wash the old window screen off and allow it to dry. After the window screen is dry, place it on the items you have to support it then cover it with the clean sheet. Now you are ready to put your wet items on it and allow them to dry.
