Usher in the New/New Year's Lament

Two New Year's Poems

Khara E. House
Usher in the New

Light the candle- flame the fire
Let the heat rise and saturate your soul
With new light. Fresh day-
Starting from the depths of you and rising
To greet the first sun, the first star.
Dance in this glow and let it fill you
Move you, run you in circles like the cycle
Of your days, and turn you back again.

New Year's Lament

Mom and dad both set new resolutions
To lose weight in two-thousand-and-ten
Dad to "fit my old jeans," mom to "feel more serene"
Both to "unveil the mirrors again"

So now mom only makes soups and salads
And now dad fills each plate up with green
And no ice cream or candy is anywhere handy
In the cupboard, no sweets to be seen

I don't mind my parents' resolution
To be fit is a fit place to be
But for me, I just pray that the vows that they made
Doesn't mean a new diet for me!

    Khara,
This poem for children is so sweet, and the usher in the new is so true. We all want to bring in the new year with glittering lights. Great poems.

Well, my kids will tell you that our house is "boring" when it comes to food. They are 18 and 15 now, and it has always been boring. For example, I've never had a Twinkie in the house or Wonder Bread or anything I don't consider food. We eat really well, and that's all they know. If they want junk, they can get it somewhere else. LOL

Thanks, all, for your comments! :) (And maybe I should point out, the second poem is for children, haha, not myself-- these are NOT my parents, lol!)

It is hard to live with dieters when one has a sweet tooth, isn't it? I like my veggies but I prefer a bit of chocolate or some ice cream now and then.
