Using Accountability Groups in Your Job Search

April M. Williams
Many of my 1-1 career coaching clients say they benefit the most from the weekly accountability personal coaching offers. They know the next week I will ask them about their progress in achieving their goals. Clients do not want to meet for our coaching call to tell me they did not take the necessary steps needed to get results they desire. They find having someone to be accountable to helps them keep focused on the most important steps they need to take. As a result, they are more productive in their job search.

Are you using an accountability group in your job search? If not, you may consider joining one to help you stay on track.

What is a job search accountability group?

An accountability group is a collective with shared goals and common objectives. They meet to support each other by sharing resources, providing encouragement and leveraging knowledge.

Who can benefit from joining a job search accountability group?

Job seekers who want to support others and benefit from the public accountability the group provides. To be beneficial, make a commitment to attend your group regularly. Share your insights and perspectives with your group. Members learn from each other's experiences and are motivated by the energy in the group.

What will I get out of joining a job search accountability group?

What you get from the group depends on what you contribute to the group. The most successful accountability groups have active members who liberally share ideas and resources with others. By being an active contributor, you and your group will reap the rewards.

How do I find a job search accountability group?

Ask those in your network if they know about local accountability groups. If you cannot find a group, start your own. Recruit other job seekers in your local area and establish ground rules. Determine when and how often you will meet, agendas and communication methods.

A job search accountability group may be just the thing you need to keep you focused in your job search.
