Botox is a botulism toxin. Many people know it can be used to temporarily eliminate wrinkles. It has also been used to treat certain migraines and muscle pain. If you think this is a treatment that would benefit you there is a link below that offers more details.
Some multiple sclerosis patients have had relief from spasticity with Botox treatments. Spasticity can limit range of motion and the ability to take care of one's daily needs.
The botulinum toxin used for this treatment is a neurotoxin called bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Three different types of botulinum toxin are used for such therapies. The one commonly referred to as Botox is OnabotulinumtoxinA. The others include RimabotulinumtoxinB (Myobloc) and AbobotulinumtoxinA (Dysport).
Botulinum toxin injections are not a cure for multiple sclerosis. The injections are given in the muscles involved in the spasticity only. When spasticity is in many muscles or larger muscles these injections may not help.
The injections of botulinum toxin are usually repeated in about three months. It is thought that to do so more often would cause a patient with multiple sclerosis to build up antibodies to the toxin. Injections of botulinum toxin may not be a good choice of treatment when many muscles are involved or when the spastic muscles are large.
Please share this information with anyone you know who has multiple sclerosis.
