In order to protect all that data on our computers, it is best to back it up. One of the most common and easiest to use methods of data backup is to use a CD burner. Most computers come standard with a CD burner. Backing up your data using the CD burner isn't perfect. However, the benefits far exceed any pitfalls associated with it.
What makes backing up your data with a CD burner advantageous is your data will be stored on a CD disc. These discs are called CD-R discs. Currently, the standard CD-R disc will be able to store up to 700 MB of information. That equates to a lot of data. The CD-R disc will easily hold any type of files you have on your computer. For example, it will store documents, software, programs, pictures, music, etc.... In fact, the CD-R can backup entire folders and their contents very quickly and efficiently.
There is also another type of disc you can use. These discs are called CD-RW discs. The RW stands for rewritable. What this means, is you can keep adding to the disc until it is full. Another feature of this type of disc is, you can completely delete all the data on the disc, then reuse the disc to store more data.
CD-R discs do not have this ability. Once you store data on them and hit the complete button, you will not be able to add anything more to the disc. You will also not be able to delete the data on that disc. CD-R's are more economical, as you can reuse the discs as need be.
The cost of both the CD burners and the CD's themselves are extremely reasonably priced. Even just a few years ago, the cost of them was significantly higher. Just as almost everything else computer related, the prices have dropped. As mentioned, if you have a newer computer, you probably already have a CD burner installed. If not, you can easily buy a CD burner and CD's and either install it yourself or have it installed. In fact, they even make external CD burners, so you wouldn't even have to open your computer up. For the convenience, you will pay a lot more for an external CD burner, than an internal one.
Backing up your precious data to a CD is both reliable and economical. They provide you easy access to your data, in case of data loss. If you're looking for a way to back up your priceless data for a few dollars, this is the best way to go.
