Using Cognitive Dissonance to Renew Your Mind

What is Cognitive Dissonance?

Liz Gamble
As we were born into this world, we were born with faults and shortcomings, a bad nature. This is something that we all share - no one gets away scott-free. The great thing about knowing there is a God is that you will find out that an atonement was made for all those faults through His son Jesus Christ who took it all upon the cross. And if that was all that He ever did for us for the rest of our lives - that would be enough! But that's not the end; it's only the beginning and the answers all start coming in when we clear out some of the debris and garbage that has set up camp in our bodies and minds.

Believe it or not, we are not sentenced to walk around the rest of eternity with a garbage in-garbage out mindset. Not at all. Father God provided the Word to rearrange those unbearable thoughts that lead to unbearable actions and we use it to renew the mind - and it has got to be done continually if you want to move closer and closer to the identity and love of the Risen Lord.

Cognitive dissonance is how we go about renewing our minds. This term means that when two opposing thoughts come into our mind at the same time, we must analyze them, and choose one.. Both thoughts cannot remain in the same space, at the same time, so one has to be accepted by our previous mindset and then the other must either conform, or it has to go! This is the thought process of Cognitive Dissonance at work in our brains, and it is a very healthy thing. Whether you know God or not, you can still use the concept to make new decisions and clean out your brain.

The problem is that many people are living life in a box that is way too small for them. The reason is they are not utilizing cognitive dissonance. They are rejecting every thought that doesn't fit into their small spider web of a mind instead of allowing new thoughts to come in, and stretch their concepts of reality. Being a Christian who is totally in love with Jesus, I want to allow His new words to come in every chance I can. This allows me to open up, evaluate new ideas and try them out to see if they will improve my world. If I accept the true word of God to replace the old, and bring in the new, I can clean out the bad habits, and mental strongholds that hold me back from being all I can be in God's world. Know the Truth and the Truth shall set you Free!
