Using College to Earn More Money

Matthew Schieltz
There are plenty of reasons to attend college and thousands of people are enrolled in college courses each year. But do they use their knowledge and degrees wisely? I actually know of some people who have their bachelor's degree and even master's degree, but yet they continue to work at dead-end jobs and don't move forward even though they have the ability, knowledge, and educational degrees to do so. There are several college bachelor degrees, however, that are very invaluable unless you go on to graduate school to get a master's degree or doctorate. Psychology is one of those examples; to actually be able to have your own private practice you need to have a PhD or PsyD.

Some people do get frustrated while attending college because not only can it be a long and winding road, but you also have to deal with visits to your school's financial aid office, buying expensive textbooks, and worrying about how you're going to pay the bills. Here are some tips to getting through college with the goal of achieving your career and financial dream goals.

Think Ahead

Even though some people suggest that you shouldn't plan out your whole future, if you are in college and are going to be attending for 5 or more years, it might be helpful to actually plan out what you will do after you have your educational degree from the college you're attending. Are you going to need to go to graduate school? If so, where will you attend and how will you get there? If you are going to settle into a career right after graduation, will you stay where you're currently living or will you move? Planning out your destination can be helpful not only to be able to know what you're going to be doing after graduation but it will also help you to stay focused on your college degree.

Plan Ahead

Some people decide that they are going to buy a house right after graduation, while others decide that they're going to purchase a brand new car with their new career salary. Whatever you decide, however, it would be best to actually have a goal in mind after you finish your college degree and you've settled down into your career. This goal, whether it be a brand new car after graduation or a big house, will help you to stay focused on getting your college degree and will also help you to keep your GPA high while attending college courses.

Stay Focused

If thinking and planning ahead are not enough to be able to help you stay focused on your career and financial dream goals after college graduation, another suggestion would be to actually make those things come alive. By this I mean cutting out or printing out pictures and simple reminders of what you're working toward in college. Having those simple reminders around can help you to stay on track while studying Anatomy or Psychology.

Using college to get to your career and financial stability is a good way to do so. Plenty of people underestimate the power of a college degree; however, one can clearly earn more money doing what they love in their career than they can by doing something else that is less desirable. Take the college journey and use it as a way to obtain your other goals throughout life; you'll be glad you did!
