Using the Color Wheel to Decorate Your Home

M. Kaye Hash
Many people have trouble deciding with which colors to decorate their home. If you are one of those who has trouble picking out the colors for your room here are some ideas to help you decide what colors will work best for you.

First, look around your home and environment

What colors are already in your home that you love? Do you have an outfit that you love because of the tone? Is there a boutique or café that you feel wonderful in? Is there a hiking trail or beach that you love to visit? What colors are used in these places? What colors make you feel good? Do you like warm colors, deep reds and oranges, or cool colors, soft blues and greens?

Think about which room you are decorating

What room you are decorating may have a large impact on which colors you pick. You may want your kitchen to be bright and cheery and may pick reds and yellows while a more peaceful feel in your bedroom may call for shades of blue.

Complimentary Colors

Complimentary colors are found across from each other on the color wheel. Blue and yellow are complimentary colors as well as red and green. Complimentary colors can lend a more formal feel to a room and may be best used in living or dining rooms.

Analogous Colors

Analogous Colors are colors that are found next to each other on the color wheel, they are more similar than complimentary colors. Blue and purple and red and orange are analogous colors. Analogous colors are considered more casual and may be best in bedrooms and family rooms.

Choosing the color of your flooring can often be easier than choosing any of the other colors in your room. Often a neutral floor color is the best option because it is cheaper to change the accent color in a room (pillows, candles, lamps, etc.) and cause a big visual impact than to get new flooring.

If you are looking for color in your flooring there are many options available. Carpet, ceramic and area rugs are the most versatile when it comes to color and can be found in many shades and colors. Ceramic, especially, can be used in many ways to make intricate patterns and shades of color on your floor and area rugs are an excellent way to add a punch of color to your beautiful hardwood. Do not forget the many shades of hardwood that can be used to compliment your décor and the many colors of laminate that are easier to maintain than your traditional hardwoods or ceramics.

Remember, color is about what you want to feel when you walk into your room. The colors you choose can calm or excite you each time you walk into a room.
