Using the Computer to Control Home Remodeling Costs

How to Keep the Cost of Remodeling Down

Megan Mathews
When remodeling your home, office, or anywhere else, the cost is probably never going to be where you want it to be. With the prices of labor, materials, fuel to run equipment, and everything else going up, it's hard to keep a consistent price on the work of the remodeling being done. Everyone has different requirements that will require different amounts of labor, materials, and energy costs, and each contractor has different pricing, though most are fairly competitive.

If a computer software program was designed to analyze the data given by the client and the average cost of fuel, materials, and supplies were all entered into the program regularly as a set number, which was determined by the current pricing around the area that the remodeling was going to take place in, all would prevent contractors from jacking up the price of those specific categories. Every contractor would then need to use this program to estimate the cost of the project using these materials, and would keep prices of remodeling at an even keel. The only part that would be hard to regulate would be the cost of labor since different businesses use different methods of renovation, some have more or less employees, etc.

A computerized cost estimator would be every consumers dream however because it would make them far more comfortable when receiving bids from contractors. Computer software would make it easier to compare bids from different contractors because the cost of supplies would be very similar, thus giving them a more accurate picture of where the money is going, and who charges what for labor.

Computers are already playing an important role when it comes to contractors making their final bids to clients. Many contractors already use a type of cost analysis program that consists of data taken from previous projects, as well as cost per unit, and uses complicated formulas to determine the approximate cost of the upcoming project. This computer program aids the contractor in alleviating him from the repetitiveness and complications of such formulas. Though the programs that are already in use cannot complete the estimation process on their own, they do play a significant role and already are aiding to keep the costs of remodeling at a reasonable level. In the future, hopefully there will be a more advanced type of software available that includes the set prices of raw materials. This would not only help the contractor in making a bid, but truly put the customer more at ease knowing that everyone is getting the same pricing on materials, and that there is no way for the contractor to weasel more money out of them by raising the prices on those items.
