Using Continuing Education as Medicine

Learning to Keep Disease at Bay

Maricia D. C. Johns
As most people mature, they tend to think their learning stops when they conclude their formal education whether it is with a college graduation or whatever. They tend to think they know it all, so why bother to continue to learn.

A recent report stated that more individuals than previously thought will eventually be diagnosed with the onset of Alzheimer's. It also stated what we already know-there is no cure. There are medicines that slow the progression down once diagnosed, but no cure. There was however, a high note. It had been determined that keeping an active mind seems to be keeping this disease at bay a little longer. If not learning just for learning sake, then learning to keep this disease at bay for a while makes education of some sort seem to be a lifelong experience.

One of the main reasons to keep learning is because one shouldn't want to be lacking in knowledge or at least not be perceived as such. Believe it or not it will also assist with anger management. Most people get angry when they don't know.

There are people who have not made it into the 21st century. They for some reason or not still do not have an email address, and are not computer literate. These are intelligent people who feel out-of-place going back to school to learn something that seems so every day to most. To assist them into the 21st century, there are hundreds of continuing education courses and even more classes for credit toward a degree or certification. While taking these courses, it will exercise the brain and keep it fit.

For those that are in the mood for another career or a hobby, they could take continuing education classes that offer such things as real estate, cake decorating, and all types of computer classes, Spanish or even another foreign language. Learning can be fun-I have my license to do foot reflexology. I never plan to use it, but it was fun-kind of figured out I don't do feet.

One class that keeps the mind very active is looking up one's family tree. They have courses that assist you with this-I took that course too.

For those that do not wish to leave their home, there are online courses. You can go to the local supermarkets to learn everything from healthy cooking to wine tasting-took those too.

All churches have some sort of bible study--taking this class forever. In the North Texas area, there are wonderful museums that offer tours, classes and lectures. You can even take classes at the zoo. Just interacting with other people whether in person or over the internet keeps the mind active.

We can rub all kinds of creams to keep the wrinkles away. We can take vitamins and exercise to try and keep the body fit. It's about time we start to keep the brain young by learning something each and every day.

Nicely done. Too many people seem to think that human development is finished at age 18!
