Using Custom Textures in Second Life

Carrie Lowe
Many people who decide to create items within Second Life find that using custom textures is much more effective for their needs. Not only are they able to quickly and easily create the perfect texture for their needs while not having to devote large amounts of time to searching around Second Life and then spending a large amount to purchase it. For those looking to create custom textures there can be plenty of great benefits, but there are also some cons that should be considered also.

When you are working with custom textures you have a lot more control over how they are used, though there is the problem of having to figure out exactly how to create the texture to actually make it appear how you want. Most people make the mistake of creating textures that are far too small to offer a good quality picture. In order to have a truly exceptional quality texture you need to take the time to carefully consider that you need your picture to be at least 256 x 256 pixels. While some smaller sizes will work, the larger the pixel count the better the image quality. This is extremely true when you are working with images and textures in Second Life.

Decide what you can really afford to spend. In order to work with a custom texture you have to pay a $10L upload fee for each texture. While this translates into mere pennies, it can quickly add up if you plan to work with lots of different custom textures. It is very important that you consider carefully what your actual goals are. If you are simply looking to find a texture affordably then often considering something that is custom made will not be the best solution for your needs, many times you will instead need to opt for a large pack of textures that you can buy already ready for your needs.

Choosing a custom texture you will have a lot more control over the way that your textures actually look, but typically, the cost will be much higher. Shopping around for the best deal possible on textures can allow you to get much further in your content creation and still save the greatest amount of money. Struggling and stressing trying to get your texture collection expanded will do you little good and carefully selected textures that are already available can be a great help for your situation.
