Discount brokers are also known by the name of consolidators. They buy big blocks of tickets directly with an airline. A lot of times these are international flights but you can find domestic brokers as well. A broker or consolidator is chosen by the ability to sell in large quantities.
As a consumer sometimes it is difficult to know who is a reputable broker to work with. For this reason sometimes it is better to use a travel agent when looking to purchase a ticket with a broker. Even though the agent will add on a fee the discounts that you can receive from a broker are sometimes up to 70%. Even when you add the fee for the agent, the tickets are usually still a very good deal. A travel agent can also help you better in the event of a cancellation.
Like in most circumstances when buying a plane ticket the more in advance that you buy the ticket the better the price. This is also true with brokers. It is also more possible to find a discounted fare if your dates and times are flexible. Traveling during the week is always more cost effective than flying on the weekend. You also need to consider how long you will be staying. Many tickets purchased with a broker will require you to stay in a destination for 4 or more days.
Be prepared to travel to and from major hubs. Often tickets that are available with brokers are only available from one major city to another major city. It is important that you know all the major cities surrounding your departure and destination. Even though it might be a little inconvenient to get to another airport it could well be worth the money that is saved in the process.
One of the most common reasons someone would use a broker is for group travel. If you'll be traveling with four or more people you may want to nominate a leader to call a travel broker and see how much money you can save by obtaining a group rate. Many people never think of this as an option simply because they don't know it exists.
Even as working with a consolidator or broker is not the average way that one buys a ticket, it can be very economical. It is possible to find reputable brokers that offer with limited restrictions. So do your research and enjoy your trip. By adding a little more effort and time you may end up saving a lot more money than if you had simply logged on to an airline site and bought the fire ticket you saw.
