Using English as a Logistics Coordinator
My first job was at a national window shutters and blinds company that imported home furnishings from Asia and distributed them to home improvement stores here in the US. The company heavily emphasized customer service here in the US along with communicating with their agents in Asia. I was told that I primarily hired because my English degree would provide the company with a better communication tool. I primarily dealt with domestic customer service and was responsible with producing the weekly and monthly reports on our company's status. Good grammar and spelling were very essential in these reports since any incorrect information could misconstrue the data and reflect poorly on upper management's presentation. Many employees appreciated my expertise and I was even offered a job by my boss to tutor his children in English.
Using English as a Purchasing Agent
My second and current job is working as a purchasing agent for aerospace and transportation parts. Export is the key to this company's business and the more order placed from out customers internationally, the better. Thus, correct wording and detail is very important, especially when placing multiple purchase orders to manufacturers here in the US. Any error could potentially result in the loss of hundreds or thousands of dollars. My colleagues always approach me to proof-read their assignments or review their contracts. I am also frequently asked to write formal letters and business related requests.
Using English on a Daily Basis
Many do not realize the importance of proper English and correct spelling. A single word can affect first impressions and job applications. English Literature encompasses all subjects such as history, politics, science, and mathematics. One word also can provide the ability for a person to convey emotions or even get a point across much more effectively. Using correct grammar, knowing how to spell word correctly, and building your vocabulary can all boost self esteem and add to your success.
English is not limited; only individuals choose to limit it by not wanting to learn it or apply it correctly.
