Using Essential Oils Safely

Guidelines for Effective and Careful Use

With recent research about essential oils being used to fight MRSA infections and other bacteria, it is likely that we'll see an increase in home use of essential oils.

Tips for Essential Oil Safety

Essential oils should be used carefully in health applications at home. While essential oils have been used for hundreds of years safely, they are very strong. Like all medicinal compounds, they effect the body and should be used when they will be the most effective, and avoided when they might cause harm.

Research Essential Oils and Use Pure Oils

Not all essential oils are created equally. Some are adulterated and contaminated with other chemicals. This is more common with the very precious and expensive essential oils like sandalwood, rose and frankincense. And you need to make sure you are using the right essential oils - check labels for the scientific name of the plants you want. Different plants, even in the same family, produce different essential oils with different functions.

Be Aware of Photo-sensitivity and Skin Reactions

Some essential oils increase photo-sensitivity and can increase the likelihood of sun burns. Also those with sensitive skin or allergies should be aware that essential oils can cause skin rashes or reactions like any substance placed on the skin can. Using essential oils undiluted can increase the likelihood of this happening, and should not be done without the supervision of a health care professional.

Dilute Essential Oils According to Recommended Guidelines

Most recipes and aromatherapy texts will call for the heavy dilution of essential oils used directly on the skin - often in a ration of 10 drops or less per one ounce of carrier oil! With such a dilution ratio as the recommended practice, it's easy to see why using essential oils undiluted is not considered safe home use. Essential oils are very strong and should used one drop at a time.
