Using Fruit for DIY Wedding Table Centerpieces

Using fruit for your wedding table centerpieces can result in a truly unique and modern display. Fruit comes in many shapes and colors and can be used in many different ways. This guide will help you make the right choice.

By the time you are considering what to use for your wedding table centerpieces you probably already have a theme and colors picked out. Since fruit does come in so many colors it will be easy to coordinate your centerpieces with the rest of your wedding.

Modern Centerpieces

For bright colors and a contemporary look try citrus fruits like lemons, limes and oranges. Grapefruits are usually not used whole because the skin bruises easily and it is hard to find pretty ones. However, the pink variety looks very good cut up and they smell wonderful too.

Citrus fruits look great in water. Whole fruit will float unless you poke small holes in the rind. Water will enter the fruit and weigh it down so they will stay at the bottom. Cut cross sections from the center of the fruit and float them on the top. They also can be cut in half. Face the cut side outwards. Large square glass containers work very well. For an even more modern look use very tall narrow glass vases. If you are using whole fruit make sure the opening is wide enough for them to fit. If they aren't try cutting strips of the rind and using them in twists throughout the container along with cut pieces of the fruit.

If you want to use flowers, bright gerbera daisies are nice accents to bright citrus fruits.

Casual Country Centerpieces

For a casual and fun look try apples, pears and cherries. Apples come in red, green, yellow, and even shades of pink. Pears should be used in season so you can pick solid green or yellow pears that don't have a lot of bruising or brown spots. Cherries can be expensive so you can use them just for accents. Keep all of these fruits whole for display. Apples and pears will brown quickly if cut.

Try turning a small basket on its side and letting fruit spill out of it onto the table. Or find small child sized wagons or wheelbarrows to pile the fruit into. Apples are cute sitting on top or around miniature bales of hay.

Flowers that accent these fruits well are white daisies or bright yellow sunflowers.

Unique Centerpieces

Different fruits can be used to create truly unique or seasonal displays on your tables. Pineapples, coconuts and bananas can be used for a tropical or summer theme. Try using cut and scooped out pineapples or coconuts as vases for flowers or other fruits.

Grapes are another great fruit that comes in several colors. They can be used by themselves or as a filler in bigger displays. Pomegranates and dragon fruits may be hard to find but can be used for really interesting centerpieces. Kiwi fruits are really pretty sliced, but they need to be used in water since they will brown. Put a little lemon juice in the water to make them last even longer.

Strawberries are really the only berry that will last very long and not get mushy in a centerpiece. They are pretty mixed with little white flowers or even roses for an unexpected surprise.

Don't be afraid to experiment with fruits for your centerpieces. They can be less expensive than traditional flowers and more visually exciting.
